Dog, presumed dead, rescued after fall off 200 foot cliff

COLUMBIA GORGE, Ore. – A 10-person team of volunteers rescued a Labradoodle early Monday morning after it fell off a steep trail near Punchbowl Falls.

Gracie’s owner, Michelle Simmons, said she and her family were so sure the dog had died after falling off the 200 foot cliff that they held a memorial service.

But a passing hiker heard the dog at the bottom of the cliff, and a rescue team was lowered down and fitted her with a harness at around 12:30 a.m.

“We strongly urge dog owners to keep their pets on leash all the time in areas such as the Columbia Gorge,” said Rene Pizzo, a team leader for the Oregon Humane Society’s volunteer technical rescue team.

Gracie suffered only scratches and bruises.
