The parent company of a Jacksonville-based business received a $250,000 deal from the Department of Defense to provide tethered blimps for drone training for soldiers.
The deal with Drone Aviation Holding Corp., parent to local company Lighter Than Air Systems, follows on an early deal related to the company's blimps and involves additional parts for the two blimps-in-a-box, or BiB-250s. Soldiers at Fort Polk in Louisiana are testing the two blimps.
The tethered blimps, and the company's other tethered drones, operate within FAA regulations because they are not free flying. Drone Aviation Holding Corp. CEO Felicia Hess said that not only are the tethered drones safer, but they can transmit data from the camera to a computer via the tether, which is also a cable.
She said the company will continue to corner the market on tethered drones and has no plans on switching to free-flying drones, as of now. She said the additional order from the Department of Defense is proof their product is successful.
"It's a great piece of work that shows we're moving in the right direction," Hess said. "We're getting validation from the soldiers themselves."
