3:00 p.m. New Development in Fabric Anti-Counterfeiting Technology

Rory Wolf, Pillar Technologies/ITW

The textile industry is experiencing rapid growth, particularly within specialty and advanced application segments such as smart textiles and the use of nano-coatings. However, brand owners and governments are increasingly challenged to protect these highly engineered products from counterfeiting. Current anti-counterfeiting systems for fabrics and textiles are likewise challenged in achieving secure binding of taggants to the product, consistent reproducibility, easy integration into existing production processes, and reliable assessment of authenticity. A new anti-counterfeiting development involves a novel composition including DNA which is bonded to an atmospheric plasma-treated surface. Surfaces treatable by the development with no change in physical properties include continuous filaments, yarns, woven and nonwoven fabrics, as well as other organic and inorganic materials. The presentation will describe the marker DNA, the atmospheric plasma treatment protocol, and the method and benefits of significantly improving binding of DNA to a surface.
