I think the artwork was copying the animated movie, which appeared to try to imitate anime-style and aimed at young pre-teens. Aging the characters is probably to appeal to a wider audience.

I haven't heard anything about Red Giant being at the New York comic con. Neither, Keenspot or Red Giant is listed as an exhibitor.
