School budgets don't include Driver Ed anymore. Damn shame. We had it in the 60s (high school years for me '65-'69). Cars were donated by a local dealership. I learned on '67 Pontiac Bonneville then switched to my mother's '65 Plymouth Fury II station wagon. Big cars... but not as big as the classic you learned in... '57 two-tone Ford! How freakin' cool is that?!?!
Your coach sounds like a great guy. We should have more like him these days. The damn kids might learn something instead of getting their stinky butts kissed when they misbehave.
My driver ed teacher was a bizarre tiny old guy who appeared to be in his 60s... Mort the Sport... lived with his 80 something year old mother... used to call me "Schatzie" (spelling?)... German for Sweetie (he'd be in jail these days <ggg> harmless guy though).
One time while I was behind the wheel he asked me what I'd do if he took off his seatbelt, slide over, and put his arms around me. My response... "I'd pull over and tell you to put your seatbelt back on." The good old days.
My biggest problem was figuring out left from right. He told me to make a right on the highway... I made a left... did the same thing on my driver's test as well as wind up a foot and a half from the curb parallel parking... flunked steering (you could flunk one thing) and was told the only reason I passed was because I was so cute. I was so upset my only thought was "And now he's making fun of my looks." I had a very low self-image at the time. LOL
BTW... I can now parallel park with the best of them. 21 years in midtown Manhattan grabbing spaces during rush hour. <ggg>
14 and able to drive. I agree that's not a problem if there is low volume traffic. Been 17 around here for as long as I can remember. Now they have restrictions until you are 18 plus. Traffic is a BIG problem... too many kids destroying themselves and others.
