Patents granted at later date are no good, it is the first ones that are recongnized. You can't go patent the micro chip now and say yours is the good one because it's later. The patent office grants patents to anything that qualifies, even if a similiar one exists, and they let the courts decide which one to recognize if there is ever a dispute. And the courts go by who did it first.
