Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s commonsense bill to help millions of Americans struggling with student loan debt will be on the Senate floor again next week.
“Exploding student loan debt is crushing young people and dragging down our economy,” said Warren.
The bill, Bank on Students Emergency Loan Refinancing Act .. https://www.govtrack.us/congress/bills/113/s2292/text, would allow those with existing federal student loans and private loans in good standing to refinance at a lower rate to make repayment more manageable. In order to offset the cost of refinancing, the bill would have implemented the “Buffet Rule,” a minimum tax rate of 30 percent for individuals with incomes of $1 million or more.
“With this bill, we show the American people who we work for in the United States Senate—billionaires or students.”
“When we break the filibuster, we say together, ‘This bill matters, this generation matters, your future matters,’” Warren said. “That’s what we can do here.”
Currently, more than 70 percent of America’s students borrow money to attend college, and the average student graduates from college owning nearly $30,000. Forty million Americans have student loan debt, which currently stands at a staggering $1.2 trillion, surpassing credit card debt.
“[Student loan debt] is stopping young people from moving out of their parents’ homes, from saving for a down payment, buying homes, buying cars, starting small businesses, saving for retirement, or making purchases that grow our economy. It doesn’t have to be this way,” said Warren.
“Allowing students to refinance their loans would put money back in the pockets of people who invested in their education.”
