The real story about the ANU find is here: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2014/08/140821090701.htm They demonstrated light-induced charge transfer in a modified ferritin protein. This process is intra-molecular, we're still far from actual H2 generation. The technically interesting bit is that this protein could eventually be over-expressed in ordinary bacteria and mass-produced in a vat.
