#10581 RE: Orion Nebula #10568

Orion Nebula, to my understanding flash is only part of their solution. Remember also that Peter Bookman was earlier involved with Fusion-io that is utilized in the V3 appliance, and relies heavily on flash storage.

The new V3 hyper-converged appliance combines compute and storage:

From V3 side I would refer to:
Sphere 3D completely redesigned the architecture of the Virtual Desktop appliance where all of the computing power of the solution resides. Every bottleneck that slowed performance was eliminated. For example, the V3 appliance combines CPU, memory, and OS drive space directly on the appliance. The operating system and applications remain instantly available to the CPU using industry standard solid state (flash) memory, preventing delays associated with spinning disk drives, decreasing context switching latency, and increasing access speed for working data. By optimizing the use of local storage, and leveraging shared storage (SANs and NAS) only for persistent user data, access latency is decreased by an order of magnitude.

From Overland side:
"Overland Storage completes the V3 virtual desktop solution with optional SnapServer and SnapScale storage solutions that deliver cost-effective, reliable and infinitely-scalable performance and capacity."
Two models of the V3 Appliance are available from authorized Overland Storage channel partners. The V100 and V200 V3 Appliance models are optimized to serve up to 100 and 200 virtual desktops

Now, listening to the interview of Steve Zivanic, ?Vice President, Storage Hardware Systems Business Group at Oracle I learned something important. Please check this video starting at 16:15 till 17:23 and you'll understand that they feel tape will have an important role in the future...

And who was recently awarded a patent for tape emulation and has plenty of tape products to choose from + its own dedicated software? OVERLAND
