Yes, Einar was advising his investors to donate their claims to BYU, and then take a deduction based on some wild, unsubstantiated valuation. The IRS did not fall for it, and took some of his investors to court.

Of course, Einar skated free, but his investors took it in the shorts. Not only did the IRS disallow their deductions, but they were stuck with the worthless claims sold to them by Einar. This scam was done using mining claims staked by Einar and his brother in the Reveille Mine area, possible some of the very same claims that he eventually ended up selling to CJTF. It is very common to see the same mining claims used over and over for various iterations of a mining scam.

Speaking of claims being used as part of multiple scams, did you see that one of the mining properties that CJTF is supposedly purchasing is the Gold Nugget Mine in Quartzsite, AZ? That is the same "mine" that former hockey team owner Pocklington was caught ripping off investors with several years ago. To the tune of $5 million, which he has been ordered to pay back. And now CJTF is acquiring it? How interesting.
