Selectra is delighted to formally announce that it has entered into an agreement with the Harmony Gold Mining Company to produce bioenergy on mine-impacted land in South Africa as part of Harmony’s land restoration efforts.

The ‘Renewables and Mining Summit‘ which took place on the 23rd and 24th of June 2014 at the Hilton in Sandton, Johannesburg, brought together leaders from the mining and energy industries to discuss the challenges and opportunities for deployment of renewable energy in African mines. During the Summit, Mr Dwight Rosslee of Selectra and Mr Leonard Rootman of Harmony Gold Mining Company Limited (Harmony) presented a joint case study on the Harmony Bio-energy project. Mr Rootman made use of the opportunity to make the formal announcement of Harmony’s implementation of the Bioenergy project.

The presentation, entitled ‘Cultivating Energy crops as part of mines restoration initiatives,’ dealt with the prospects for growing energy crops on mine impacted land for biogas or thermal energy applications, whilst providing a unique land restoration option with long-term benefits for mines
