David Aaronovitch is a British journalist who writes for The Times and the chairman of Index on Censorship. This was a group originally set up in the 1970’s to provide support for dissident writers in the Soviet Union. It’s been vastly expanded since then to be a global defender of free speech.

For Aaronovitch it all boils down to asking yourself this when you’re tempted to bite your tongue ... “Is the desire to stop somebody saying something or to punish them for something they’ve said? Is it really absolutely essential? Generally the answer will be no ... unless you’re a despot or a dictator.”

In this conversation Aaronovitch chats with Simon Longstaff from the St James Ethics Centre. They mull over the jailing of the Al Jazeera journalists in Cairo, the dumping of the Sydney Opera Company soprano for some ugly postings on Facebook by her husband, Uthman Badar and the honour killing fiasco in Sydney and the stepping down of the CEO of Mozilla in the US for some privately held views on gay marriage.

Aaronovitch is terrific in this discussion and you may find your own prejudices being challenged by his arguments.

From the brief bits i focused on basic agreement with Aaronovitch was felt .. i think his basic position is that better to let most/whatever be said than to deny their right (well, now his basic is in bold above) .. then to speak to it .. don't know where he drew limits, if he did, yet .. i'll watch it tonight .. he mentioned present attempts by conservative/liberal governments to deny much on the internet was "literally driving people crazy" .. lol .. yeah, and some tendencies to PC elsewhere, too .. oops, check to be sure nothing will be taken the wrong way here .. no, i still agree on you and others here the the c-word/sometimes .. http://investorshub.advfn.com/boards/read_msg.aspx?message_id=104709793 .. (and posts, as most always, all around) .. in ok/'warranted' context we spoke about ..

F6, you know nothing personal directed at you, or others, here in this .. and am with you (still now at least)
on the demonstration in Holland .. http://investorshub.advfn.com/boards/read_msg.aspx?message_id=104712721 ..
