Microsoft is definitely one of the leading candidates to buy the VPLM patent portfolio.

There are quite a few reason why:

* Microsoft tried but got rejected by the USPTO on multiple occasions to get awarded a patent for Legal Intercept.

* Microsoft acquired Skype for $8.5 billion but likely will not be able to realize the true monetary value of the acquisition until they get a legal intercept ability as many large countries (India, middle eastern countries, etc.) will not allow Skype to operate without the ability to monitor its users.

* Microsoft recently stated a shift from hardware to cloud & mobile with SKYPE being one of its most heavily promoted products.

* Microsoft General Counsel stated Microsoft's increased commitment to protecting the rights of its users/clients while offering the ability for governments with warrants to get access to data of the individual that the warrant is for (and not ALL of the data on a server).

There are probably many more reasons too!
