The government will likely end up paying for the majority of patients with HCV, so at least from that perspective it's not exactly none of their business.

Why not just nationalize the entire healthcare business? Then things will be quite simple with medicine being rationed to everybody expect for chosen few with very few new drugs being developed.

Quite right.

Of course the government is likely much better off paying for the CURE (Sovaldi) than long term chronic treatment without a cure.

Plus, the government also gets taxes on the income Sovaldi earns.

PS - Don't forget all those highly-paid scientists* that biotech and drug companies employ.
