Really now? Shorting is the sale of shares you do not hold in the hopes the stock price falls. So you have an incomplete transaction on the books. When a company changes symbols all transactions must be closed because the share exchange is 1 for 1 and the old shares can no longer be traded. If you have ghost shares outstanding you have no way of covering.

Penny stocks companies who blame shorting (the company blaming not the shareholders) regularly state they are applying for a symbol change to end the shorting.

Thats not true when the ticker changes there is a new sucip number also if there is a short position they must cover because all shares must be given back and reissued if you own shares the brokers give your shares back and reissue your shares to your account.
