As far as the President goes, who knows. Geithner and DeMarco are gone, which doesn't hurt.

Re imagining

How about this for "imagination"? I do not think the old lineup (Geithner, Paulson, Bernanke, etc.) is out and gone at all. They are being brought back into the picture forcefully via discovery. Maybe the President wanted some source of settlement for some time without upsetting the elite, the really powerful people. Now, it is this very same untouchable group that may be caving in and asking Obama to cut a deal. Who knows what kind of machinations and political negotiations are happening behind the scenes?
