It was the Quadruple Witching that caused that. The effect was commodity, security and sector agnostic. GM, Microsoft, Pier 1 Imports and across the board all experienced some type of disruption.
The link below helps explain what happens on the third Friday of June. It also happens in March, September and December. For the most part they do a good job. That can be relative to a certain security of course but they did avoid a flash crash. I also made some calls and it looks like the HFT's kept their programs in check and did not take advantage of the situation.
