With the advent of the internet, telecoms realized a revenue windfall from ISP services. Unforunately internet applications such as Skype\Messenger are placing their long distance revenues in jeopardy. Napster\Gnutella really put the scare into the media industry. They couldn't care less about standardization\usablity\integeration issues. They are more interested in protecting their revenue stream.
Good points. But, BTW, I don't see any white nights on the horizon, the least likely one being something wireless in order to provide a medium for very high bandwidth applications.
