I think this might have to do with our local phone co. Started out as one of those independent mom-and-pop rural operations that somehow managed to survive the Middle Ages and held on stubbornly to its little fiefdom. A matter of their long-distance carrier not playing nice with certain other long-distance carriers.
I have a cellphone, but signal here is very weak. Guess I'll have to drive a few miles.
