Yup, you are correct. At the time Fannie & Freddie were taken into conservatorship, they were broke. So the value of what was "taken" was the negative $179.5 billion that they were bailed out for by the US government at the risk and potential expense of US taxpayers. That risk, by many accounts, remains today.

Thanks for the historical perspective. It helpfully explains why all these cases are rubbish and should be thrown out by the judge.
