P4/2.53. External I/O drive relatively large capacitive loads and consume non-trivial
amount of power. That would account for much if not most of the P4/3.0C's additional
power consumption above a linear extrapolation of P4/2.53.


If you look at the other 800MHz FSB processors on the datasheet, you will see that the others do not exhibit the same high power dissipation. It's just an observation (and speculation on my part), but I think that Intel increased voltage on the 3.0GHz part to improve bin splits. Nothing wrong with that, as long as they guarantee operation and compatibility, as they do.
