murders will probably be part of the human condition far into the future. what we don't need are machines designed especially for killing people easily and efficiently in the hands of people who are not capable of making proper decisions whether due to stress, mental illness, or cultural conditioning that shooting someone is a reasonable solution to whatever is bothering them.
People in love with guns often have clouded judgement due to their infatuation... carrying an AR-15 on your shoulder when going into an ice cream store in suburban texas goes past what most normal people would consider appropriate levels of reasonableness. blowing away a neighbor because of annoying behavior might occupy many people's fantasy lives, but having the tool to do it at hand and some alcohol lubricant sometimes differentiates between being an angry person and a murderer.
there are a few hyped cases of home invasions being thwarted with a hail of bullets, but that is outnumbered by the number of children in those type of homes that are killed each year accidentally.
yes, there will always be murders, i suppose, but there will always be more dumbasses making bad decisions in gun storage, etc. and at some point as a society we have to decide which is better... safety for the innocent or security for the paranoid.
