I see this happen with people all the time. They book tiny trading gains, pay ordinary income tax rates plus commissions on the trades and in the mean time they miss the boat on the really big gains. Schwab did a study that showed an invesre relationship between number of trades in an account and returns earned in that account. The more people trade the less they make. Of course Schwab never made this public. They love traders.
