this can be debated more so from the position that we have to now remember if the stock did take off last year vs this upcoming year, all the exec stock options that will be handed out this week would not be able to be exercised at a future time at these $2 range levels... right? So you can say that someone didn't buy an extra 10-20k shares or so... but wouldn't you rather have an extra (VPs..)100k- (CEO)400k+ shares this year instead of spending your own money thats needed for every day expenses ? I wouldn't worry about it. They will have plenty enough...
Ironically, if they were to be buying up shares this past year.... your argument would be twisted saying they are buying because they know a deal is coming and have that information, where retail investors do not... right?
Further, it just may be safer for them to wait and be granted their stock options vs buying if a deal has been completed and its being held back by any lawsuit..etc. The stock options being granted are yearly so no manipulation there, vs. buying stocks on the open market with possible information we don't have.
Its all good.
Now we wait and see how well this may unfold. CALICO, Takeda... JnJ I'd take even. : )
