Job cuts announced by U.S. employers in the first three months of 2014 were at the lowest level for that period since 1995, according to data from an outplacement firm.

According to the Challenger, Gray & Christmas report, the first quarter closed with 34,399 job cuts in March, 18% lower than those reported in February and a 30% drop from a year ago.

Job cuts in the first quarter were led by the retail sector, where employers announced 18,231 job cuts in the first three months of the year.
