Yeah Paul, I think Doom also hurts in some way. There are so many people who know that it just doesn't make any sense to buy a new PC few months before Doom is here. They will postpone the upgrade until 1-2 weeks before the release.
And I think there are many people (like me), who do a trailing upgrade. I never buy a cpu over $100, I buy a $80-$90 cpu, but I do that every year. The geek who purchased his last cpu two years ago for $300 today is trailing me in performance. The fact that I plan to try A64 or Opteron at some point does not stop me to buy an Athlon today.
