Actually the results of this study http://www.clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT01896687?term=calmare&rank=3 presented at a nurses conference showed a significant decrease in pain for the randomized group using Calmare and actually a small increase in the group using the sham device. I guess it's not a placebo after all.
