Emily West Morgan, AKA The Yellow Rose. Yellow was a term used for light skinned half-blood "darkies" (as such people were called back then), therefore The Yellow Rose of Texas. UT has the earliest original parchment copy of Yellow Rose of Texas written in 1836. The more modern versions of the song in fact replaced the term "darkie" and "darkies" with "soldier." The Gene Autry version is almost an entirely different story from the 1936 version.
