I asked the same question, about a month ago when the volume was spiking ( like today - 3 million here, 5 million there ) for about 5 - 7 days ( from memory )
I asked the question of a person close to the action, a person in the know ( who shall remain nameless, and never posted ) and he told me this, exactly :
"There are deals on the table, under consideration, and people connected with the deals ( e.g., lawyers, engineers, accountants, etc. ) are leaking the word of what is coming to friends, family members, and associates."
None of which certifies that "the deal on the table" well be signed, let alone funded. Just that people close to the action feel good about spending a coupla-three thousand bucks.
When I see something like today's action, and like I said, I did a short while ago - - - - I call people closer to the action than I am, and ask them questions over the phone.
No big deal.
All of which I posted here is true, I have not called on today's volume, because I would get the same answer as I got a short while ago.
I'll look up the dates of the last mini-volume surge and post them.

Look at the dates between February 4, 2012, and March 12, 2014. Quite a bit of volume ( we are talking about Tirex here, not a real & successful company ! ) — quite a bit of volume for Tirex, having had no announcements in a long time — 3M, 4M, 5M, 6M and even 8M shares ! ! ! ! ...For what reason ? .... The person I called at the time told me because there were deals brewing, percolating, heating up.
