Makes total sense to anyone who's been in a business that sells product online. It's one thing to show product you already carry as out of stock, temporarily. It's bad for the supplier to allow those gaps in sales (people are waaaay less likely to checkout with a product that is out of stock!), but they happen.

But there is zero advantage to putting a new product online as out of stock. In fact it's terrible. Creates a bad first impression and instills no confidence in ability to get the product, and drives users to competitors' products.

Shady stuff in Nickyland. Be interesting to see how often the snake oil is out of stock.
