Experts say worries by some expectant mothers that a June 6, 2006, delivery date, supposedly linked to a biblical prophecy, would be ominous are bunk.

The last book of the Bible, Revelations, refers to "666" as the mark of "Beast," a demonic figure with extraordinary powers to do evil. That has led some to worry that birthing a child Tuesday, which would be 06-06-06 on the calendar, could mean the child had a Satanic origin or destiny.

Rubbish, says Frank Flinn, adjunct professor of religious studies at St. Louis' Washington University.

"In the first century of our era, letters of the alphabet had numerical value," said Flinn. "Thus, in Hebrew and Aramaic the letter N stood for the number 50."

In the letter-number system, also known as Gematria, Nero's name and title would have been written NRON CSR, which is equivalent to "Neron Caesar," he said. Add the seven letters in his name and one gets 666. That Revelations used such symbolic references to Nero makes natural sense, given his persecution of the church during A.D. 64-65.

In other words, 666 refers to something in the past — not the future, said H. Greg Snyder, associate professor at Davidson College.

"But the number, like the ultimate villain to which it supposedly refers, has taken on a life of its own, as sales figures for the 'Left Behind' books — over 60 million copies — will attest. The next one comes out on June 6, 2006: 06/06/06, a marketing opportunity that only comes along once every thousand years."
