Conclusions:
The designed trickling filter systems with LECA were able to treat the fish wastewater in RAS adequately, while providing growth area for crop plants. The integrated system produced both fish and vegetables (aubergine, tomato, cucumber) suitable for human consumption.
Additional experiments showed that also industrial hemp, roses [14] and herbs (basil, parsley) can be successfully cultivated in aquaponic.
