Why bother making this statement unless potential customers are starting to question that long term commitment.

Because spreading FUD about Intel and its IPF allies committment
to IPF is the last avenue open to IBM and Sun to slow their market
share loss to IPF. Think of it as a pre-emptive strike.

As a bonus effect it contrasts the size of the effort behind IPF with
that which supports Power and SPARC.
