It difficult to decipher how accurate the daily short numbers are but I think it's obvious that there are some heavy short positions on certain tickers. The problem that shorts have is that they don't know where there shares come from.

When they take their position, they have no idea if they are borrowing John Doe's shares or if they are borrowing air shares. I think some will come to the realization when their positions get called in on Wednesday. Others may plan ahead for such an event and be covering on Monday and Tuesday.
