Spiber has "claimed" they have the ability.
They have nothing to verify that claim. They have a dress they claim is made of spider silk but there is nothing to verify that it is actually made of spider silk.
The information that they do give is really no different than the info on amsilk which makes sense since it is exactly the same process.
Amsilks fiber was not the strength of normal silk and cost about $100K a kilo
Just about anyone can make spider protein goo.
So that is no stumbling point. Randy lewis was the firs to be able to do this with his goats.
The fiber could not be made.
Now he is still getting funding to work with his goats because it is still a subject that industries want very badly.
Amsilk
Spiber in japan
Spiber in sweaden
Randy Lewis' goats
KAIST
are all doing the same thing. They all get the same results.
RL's goats actually have the best chance of success because of the goats.
The one thing not mentioned in that article is the restrictions of ecoli.
The bacteria is so tiny it can only produce the small proteins in spider silk. That will not make a fiber strong enough.
The Goats and our worms and the alfalfa are the 3 that can make the larger molecule needed.
The goats are about burnt out IMO they have failed to be feasible for decades.
The plant would be a lot tougher to work with because of its growth rate etc.
Silkworms are about the best possible course. Mostly because they can and already do make a fiber. They take away the hardest part of the process. That is the part of the process that Billions have been spent on and can not be done by humans.
I really think amsilk or spiber should be using slime eels. The amount of protein they can produce is astounding. They are large enough to produce the larger molecule. But they still have the brick wall of spinning to overcome.
Honestly even if they find a way they will never compete with a silkworm.
If they could have made silk in a lab the silkworm wouldnt exist and neither would nylon
