Altera to switch 14nm chip orders back to TSMC, says paper

This is very bad news and it's not the first time I am reading this rumour. Intel told us that the Broadwell delay was only due to inventory clearing, not process issues. If that is not the case, Intel once again lied to us, which gets more and more frequent these days - something I am keeping an eye on.

If this is not the case and 14nm is ready in time, why would Altera switch to TSMC (could be)? Pricing? Process advantage (I doubt it)? Issues with Intel as foundry? If it is the latter then we can bury the dream of Intel becoming a large foundry player - it's just not their competence I fear. If that's the case, only mobile is left to increase the volume they need for the upcoming process shrinks.

They really have to win this, otherwise it will hurt us longs a lot to stay in this stock any longer. 2015 will be crucial for Intel regarding market share in mobile.
