When it is not the norm for one to have successes, when one has an opportunity for success, many will hedge themselves against failure. The reality of success is so remote, you'll find those that will build a wall against that success, to ease the disappoint, when it is not achieved.

It's almost like the lottery, you know you have pretty much no chance to succeed, so you treat it with levity, although you hope it could be you.

One takes a reasonable shot at success and at it creeps ever so close, the reality that it could really be success is so foreign, it almost has to be forced upon the recipient.

Success is so foreign to some, the signs of impending success eludes them, they will fight the probability, in an attempt to create a self fulfilling prophecy.
