There are a lot of marathoners in my building and some run with headphones and some run without them. Our treadmills are under a large TV set and next to speakers. The speakers are driven by a stereo. Some people like to turn on the TV and crank up the volume. Some people like to turn on the stereo and crank up the volume. Sometimes both are on. There are also people in the gym that do strength training. The treadmills and other machines make a moderate amount of noise so what do people do when they want to hold a conversation across the gym?

They yell.

If I'm running outside, I need to listen for traffic, dogs off leash, bicycles, etc. It's nice to enjoy the scenery too. Music can have performance benefits too. Perhaps not for the most elite runners. Though a friend of mine running 40 miles a weak and doing about 15 marathons a year does listen to music with some of her training. She got me into running streaks in 2012.
