Who will take over Sun?

Forrester Research analyst Rob Enderle said he believes Sun's shares have reached levels at which a takeover is a distinct possibility, since the company's technology is still highly regarded in the industry. He speculated that only three firms, Hewlett-Packard, IBM (NYSE: IBM - news) and Dell (Nasdaq: DELL - news), would be in a financial position to make such a move. Sun's market cap is about $11.8 billion.

I can't see HP buying Sun, especially now that they've already had the huge battle of consolidating with Compaq. IBM, maybe, but they already have a robust server lineup. Dell is the only one left on the list.

Wouldn't it be amazing if Dell took over Sun? That would give them a great shot in the high end enterprise business, and would practically guarantee Itanium adoption in Solaris and in Sun servers. Wow, interesting speculation!
