-a group of individuals are gathered to protest the war in iraq
-all permits have been applied for and approved
-it is a peaceful rally, but police support is brought in to maintain order and to insure no laws are broken
-a frustrated, bigoted, racist, hawkish individual passing by sees the rally and decides to smash the head of the most vocal participant in an attempt to stifle the dissent
-the police sgt in charge does nothing

-later, when the matter is brought up in a courtroom, an attorney addressing the police sgt states, "it is unfortunate that at times the public takes the law in their own hands...essentially writing their own laws...but why sir didnt you intervene to uphold the laws as they apply to everyone?"
-the police sgt replied, "although the protestor was abiding by the law, he was an annoying AH and i wasnt going to jump through any hoops to assist him"
