I have used both. The DSL is great and goes down very seldom. The only time it went down is when they cut a fibre cable in my area. The cable modems are great when you are in a large area. They keep up the maintenance and it also is very fast when working properly. I would personally own either, but if you have had problems with your cable, I too would be switching to DSL. Personally I now live so far in the country, that I have gone to a satellite modem, and it is great. Weather dependent sometimes, but does very well. Slight delay in the up and down link, but then is as fast as a T-1 when it brings in the data.
