Why?

Because they've been involved with companies that have failed?

They have to have a business model that generates a return on investment without risking all their capital if they are going to give millions to a large number of companies.

It is in their best interest that the companies they finance do well.

They just have structured it so that if they don't then they don't lose all of their money.

They are funding a large spread of companies with upto millions of dollars, at startup stages when its not even clear if they will have a viable product.
