Yes it surely raises ethical issues. But (1) if it is done every year, won't it look funny not to do it? and (2) "generosity" - doesn't strike me as a lot of money given the market cap of the company or a lot of money for a lot of other comapnies (of course I may be jaded after the numbers for big drug companies and GILD).
