I have never bought a version of Windows for an existing PC of mine that already had a previous version and I doubt many people do.

Every time I have purchased a new Version of Windows it was usually because it was time for a whole new computer anyway, and/or because I wanted the new Windows(i.e. Win 95), and then went and bought a new computer for it.

I really don't think the problem for Intel is that Win 8 is less demanding than Win 7, but rather it doesn't appeal to people, so they are holding onto existing systems longer than they would have otherwise have done, if Win 8 was well received.
