New Release of Action Engine Mobile Application Platform Delivers on the Seven Rules of Mobile User Experience

Support for Java-enabled Mobile Phones, Small Memory Requirements for OTA Download, and Multimedia UI Updates Highlight New Version of Award Winning Platform

CTIA—SAN FRANCISCO—September 26, 2005—Shattering the mobile usability barrier, Action Engine® Corporation, the mobile application platform leader, today announced the availability of the newest version of its award-winning Action Engine Mobile Application Platform™ (MAP 4.0). Action Engine is exhibiting at CTIA Wireless I.T. and Entertainment 2005 from September 27-29, at the Moscone Center in San Francisco.

With this release, Action Engine becomes the only company to successfully meet all of the usability criteria defined in “The 7 Rules of Mobile Data User Experience” (http://www.drucker-associates.com/MUE.htm) report written by wireless industry expert, Elliott Drucker.

Highlighting the newest release of the platform is support for Java-powered mobile devices, enabling the breakthrough Action Engine user experience on the majority of the world’s phones. According to Ovum, 80 percent of all handsets sold worldwide in 2005 will support Java, and the installed base of these handsets exceeds 850 million devices. By supporting Java, Windows Mobile, and Symbian powered devices, Action Engine meets Drucker’s Rule #7 for “mobile device independence.”

“We are bringing our superior mobile user experience to the mass market,” said Scott G. Silk, president and CEO of Action Engine. “Now, the vast majority of mobile phone owners can access content like news, weather, sports scores, and driving directions, using 80% fewer keystrokes and receiving 20x faster results than with browser-based alternatives. Industry analysts, like Drucker, are defining the criteria for which all mobile application platform companies will be judged. Action Engine is the only company that can meet those criteria today.”

Other Action Engine Mobile Application Platform enhancements include small memory requirements to facilitate rapid over-the-air downloads and a new multimedia user interface.

“Action Engine's Mobile Application Platform offers a unique means to deliver compelling new information services to end users that is complementary to existing WAP portals,” added Tony Cripps, analyst, wireless software at Ovum. “Making the MAP client available over the air to Java-enabled handsets will only increase its attraction.”

Mobile Application Platform for the Masses

The latest Action Engine Mobile Application Platform was built using the Java MIDP 2.0 specification, so Java phone users can now get the same intuitive, responsive, and personalized Action Engine user experience people have enjoyed on Windows Mobile and Symbian devices. This consistent user experience meets Drucker’s Rule #1 for delivering the “critical component of user comfort and familiarity,” while maintaining the critical offline functionality (Rule #4) for which Action Engine has become known.

Applications built on the new edition of the Action Engine Mobile Application Platform will share information (Rule #5), automatically transferring data so that users can avoid painful data entry. The Action Engine Mobile Application Platform will also learn and remember user preferences and previous actions, offering dynamic personalization features (Rule #6) to the mobile phone user who wants to avoid typing on a tiny keypad.

Action Engine also refined the platform’s user interface (UI), improving the graphics and rendering functions. The UI features rich graphics and multimedia capabilities, as well as simplified data entry (Rule #2) to deliver an extremely satisfying user experience.

Maintaining a commitment to efficient network utilization (Rule #3), the footprint of Action Engine Mobile Application Platform code that runs on the mobile device is now less than 150K. As a result, users can quickly and easily download the Action Engine software to their mobile devices over the air.

Other Action Engine Mobile Application Platform enhancements include the addition of more open standards, such as XHTML and WML2. As a result, application developers will find it easier to build new applications quickly and with low training costs.
