Why can't others just be honest and admit that maybe, just maybe they could be wrong!

It's because if they admit that there's any possibility they're wrong their whole dream will fall apart. And they'll feel foolish.

I think that on some level most of them do realize they've been had, but don't want to face up to it, and don't want to "betray" their fellow "True Longs".

A few, of course, are just idiots.
