when I worked at GTE many many years ago, I was dismayed when I found out that when they did their annual warehouse inventory, if it was off a million (give or take), that was acceptable to them. Of course, it wasn't a giant surprise when one year they found some of the employees taking advantage of that fact.

I reconcile to the penny also. I also do that on my investment accounts and what's interesting about those is how often they don't add up properly.... pennies here and pennies there.
