Nah, they just built a lovely facility on the edge of the deck with a seat that allowed stuff to drop directly into the ocean.

Haven't you ever toured an old castle? Same thing, a nice room with a seat that is basically a hole and everything dropped directly into the moat. This kept invaders from wading across!
