Uruguay Kit: Through the years
December 4, 2013

By Chris Atkins

Design: La Celeste's sky blue shirts have managed to make one of the most inoffensive colours around one of the most feared in the football world. Completed by black shorts and socks, Uruguay's attire has remained unaltered since the very first World Cup in 1930.

Short History: Having settled upon sky blue in 1910, Uruguay have had one of the most consistent images in world football. In both their early triumphs of 1930 and 1950, the shirt featured thick white trim around both collar and sleeve, although a traditional style collar had been replaced with a V-neck by the second of the two wins. The kit would then largely unchanged until Italia '90 when a thick white stripe would be introduced down both arms. By 2002, white had largely disappeared from what was almost a completely sky blue kit, before black became the secondary shirt's colour in 2010 for the first time in 2010.

The greatest kit: The deep white V-net colour of1950, with thick white bands at the ends of the sleeves, proved the basis upon which the next few decades of Uruguay shirt were based. With the team having claimed World Cup glory, it is a shirt that remains close to the hearts of the Uruguay population.

It was Plato who said, “He, O men, is the wisest, who like Socrates, knows that his wisdom is in truth worth nothing”
