Gay Games will flop, already Bankrupt...
CHICAGO — The Federation of Gay Games has chosen Chicago for its 2006 games, and organizers said they hope to avoid the problems that forced previous hosts into bankruptcy.
Gay Games VII will bring athletes from around the world to compete in roughly 25 sporting events and three cultural events, federation co-president Kathleen Webster said Tuesday.
Chicago Games Inc. submitted the winning bid, which estimates the event will cost $6.2 million and generate $6.3 million in revenue, said Chicago Games board member Kevin Boyer.
The first Gay Games were held in San Francisco in 1982 and have been held every four years in cities worldwide. Organizers say the event is open to all people regardless of their sexual orientation, ethnicity, age or physical ability.
The event has been plagued by budgeting problems. The hosting organizations for the previous four Gay Games filed for bankruptcy after the event was over, Webster said. – Sapa-AP
